Academy of Architecture for Health

The AIA Academy of Architecture for Health (AAH) improves the quality of healthcare through design by developing, documenting, and disseminating knowledge; educating healthcare architects and other related constituencies; advancing the practice of healthcare architecture; improving the design of healthcare environments; affiliating and advocating with others that share our vision and promoting research.

Sean McGuire, AIA, NCARB - Chair
­

With over 16 years of experience in the architecture and construction industries, he is a healthcare architect at Gresham Smith. His professional background includes a range of roles in design, project management, construction management, on-site quality control, and hands-on experience designing, fabricating, and installing building envelope finish systems. This broad experience allows me to approach projects with a well-rounded perspective, ensuring both functional performance and thoughtful design.

Sean holds a professional Bachelor's Degree in Architecture, with honors, including the AIA School Medal and Certificate of Merit for Excellence in Architecture. He is dedicated to advancing the practice of architecture and improving the environments where we live and work.

Having grown up and now raising his family in St. Augustine, Florida, he is passionate about creating spaces that support the well-being of our community, with a particular focus on healthcare environments.

Sara Vecchione, AIA – Co-Chair

Sara is a healthcare architect at Gresham Smith with over 14 years of experience in the architecture and interior design fields. Her background includes healthcare, K-12, commercial, and interior design. Some of her accolades include the 2023 AIA Award of Excellence in Architecture, the 2019 AIA Diversity Recognition Program and the 2018 AIA Emerging Professionals Exhibit.

Sara is a University of Florida alumna, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude and was awarded the Alpha Rho Chi Medal, Architecture Design Excellence Award, Graduate Award for Excellence in Teaching. ­

Born in Louisiana and raised in Venezuela by Portuguese grandparents, Sara's multicultural upbringing and neurodiversity has contributed to her broad perspective and unique approach to design. Currently, she resides in the southside area of Jacksonville with her husband, their dog, and an ever-growing plant collection.

Maggie Parks - Marketing

As an Interior Designer at Mayo Clinic, Maggie works on a wide variety of projects that blend aesthetics with the unique needs of healthcare settings. She believes that good interior design has the power to help people thrive in their environments, whether they're providing exceptional patient care, enjoying quality time with loved ones, or finding peace in solitude.

A recent graduate of Iowa State University (2022), Maggie has published research on interior design for older adults with low vision and the role of empathy in interior design, showcasing her commitment to inclusive and compassionate design practices.

Outside of her professional life, Maggie loves exploring the great outdoors through birdwatching, kayaking, and hiking with her husband and golden retriever, Georgia. Her love for music finds expression in singing in her church choir and taking ballet classes.

Robert Riggio, AIA, EDAC, NCARB, LEED AP BD+C, CDT ­- Historian

Robert is a healthcare architect at LS3P, a design firm of 500+ employees, committed to the Southeast through a culture of design excellence. With nearly a decade of commercial project experience, Robert serves as a technical leader and subject matter expert for the design of radiologic and process-based hospital departments and facilities. Robert previously served as AIA Jacksonville Secretary, currently is a committee member of the AIA Academy of Architecture for Health – Jacksonville and holds credentials in evidence-based design and sustainability.

Robert earned both his Master of Architecture and Bachelor of Design in Architecture from the University of Florida. He enjoys mentoring others and is an advocate for design that is attentive to the environment of care and enriches the human experience.
